My Process

My Process

My abstract florals are formed from gestural expression, colour exploration and refinement of the subject matter.

My process is loose to intentional.  Layers upon layers of gestural brushstrokes, not just using brushes as my only way to apply paint, I will look for anything else within reach to help apply different types of mark making in my work. My colour palettes are inspired by certain interiors i am obessessing over at the time.  Colour helps to form the emotion of my work.

"The chief function of colour should be to serve expression" Henri Mattise

I start on the background, this is completely unplanned, using expressive loose brushstrokes, layers upon layers of different gestural marks, texture and colour.   Adding and subtracting layers, giving it a sense of depth, emotion and interest.

Painting is a form of meditation for me, I get lost in my work allowing emotions to surface and time just passes away.

"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life" Pablo Picasso

I then start refining the layers, knocking back some areas of the background, still using gestural brushstrokes. Then I will focus on the subject matter, narrowing in on the shape and overall composition.
